Arrivals
A Luton layover is worth leaving the airport for if you have 5.5 hours or more and can enter the UK.
London Luton Airport (LTN) is north of London, 26 miles (42 km) by rail from St Pancras. It’s a point-to-point airport with one terminal and, it says, no transit facilities for international passengers: you go through immigration, leave the arrivals building and walk round to departures. So on any connection here you’re entering the UK, and a trip into town adds the trains, not the border.
- Tickets. On separate tickets, which most Luton connections are, you collect your bags and check in again. The airport says airlines recommend being at check-in or bag drop 2 hours before your next flight.
- Bags. Excess Baggage Company stores bags in the check-in area, open daily 4am to 10pm. The British Museum turns away all wheeled cases, the Tower of London any rolling luggage, and the British Library anything bigger than 56 x 45 x 25 cm.
- Phone and payment. Contactless works on Thameslink as far as Luton Airport Parkway; the DART is a separate £4.90 fare, paid by contactless at its ticket machines or online. An eSIM keeps maps and train times working once you’re through the border.
Bags, lounges and hotels by the terminal: at the airport.
eSIM
Stay connected
An eSIM set up before you fly gives you maps and train times from the moment you clear the border. Luton mentions terminal Wi-Fi after security, but on the DART, the train and in town you need your own data.

Border
Most visitors now need a UK ETA or a visa before they fly, and at Luton every connecting passenger crosses the border.
Not needed when you stay at the airport.
- Visa-free passports. Americans, Canadians, Australians and EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need an approved ETA to enter the UK. It costs £20, usually comes through within a day, and can take up to 3 working days. You can’t get one at the airport.
- Other passports. Visa nationals, including Indian passport holders, need a Visitor in Transit visa (£74.50, leaving within 48 hours) or a Standard Visitor visa, unless a transit concession applies.
- No airside option. Luton has no transfer area, so there’s no way to change planes without entering the UK.
- eGates. If you’re 8 or older, at least 120 cm tall and from a listed country with an ETA, you can usually use the eGates. Everyone else queues at a desk.
- Time. Allow about an hour from landing to sitting on the DART shuttle.

Into London
The Luton DART takes 4 minutes to Luton Airport Parkway station, and trains reach St Pancras in 22 to 45 minutes.
Not needed when you stay at the airport.
| Ride | Into town | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Luton Airport Express, the fastest | 22 minutes non-stop to St Pancras, every 30 minutes | From £10 in advance, DART included |
| Thameslink, the most frequent | 24 to 45 minutes to St Pancras, then Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge | £12.30 off-peak by contactless, plus £4.90 for the DART |
| National Express or Green Line coach | 60 to 90 minutes to Baker Street, Marble Arch and Victoria | Fares vary |
Allow about 45 minutes from the terminal to St Pancras, and about an hour to Blackfriars. The DART runs 24 hours a day. Thameslink trains back from St Pancras run until 12:58am on weekdays and Saturdays and 12:46am on Sundays, then about once an hour through the night, except after 1:44am on Saturday nights.
Every way in, with the last trains by station: getting into London.
What to do
The British Library is next door to St Pancras, and St Albans Cathedral is about half an hour from the terminal.

The fastest plan for a short layover
- Clear the border and follow the signs to the Luton DART: 4 minutes to Luton Airport Parkway.
- Take the first train to St Pancras: 22 minutes on the Luton Airport Express, 24 to 45 on Thameslink.
- Walk 4 minutes to the British Library, whose Treasures Gallery is free. It opens at 9:30am (11am on Sundays) and stays open to 8pm Monday to Thursday.
- Head back from St Pancras, leaving town 3 hours before your flight.
Watch the calendar
- Sundays: St Paul’s Cathedral is open for worship, not sightseeing, and Thameslink starts later: the first train from Luton Airport Parkway leaves at 6:26am, and the first that reaches Blackfriars at 8:45am.
- Mondays: Borough Market is closed, except every day from 30 November to 31 December 2026, and the Tower of London opens at 10am, as it does on Sundays.
- Christmas and New Year: no trains run on Christmas Day, and no Thameslink trains on Saturday 26 December 2026. Trains finish earlier on 24 and 31 December, and Thameslink runs a reduced service on 28 December and 1 January, so check before you leave the airport. The British Library’s whole St Pancras site closes on 12 and 13 December 2026.
- Late openings: the British Museum stays open to 8:30pm on Fridays, and Tate Modern to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. In St Albans the cathedral closes at 5pm and Verulamium Museum at 4pm every day.
Our itineraries cover St Albans, the British Library, the British Museum, Bankside, Borough Market and the Tower, Westminster, the Natural History Museum and a plan for night arrivals.

Head back
Be back at Luton 2 hours before departure, with your onward boarding pass.
Not needed when you stay at the airport.
- Time. Allow about an hour to get through the border to the DART and about 45 minutes each way between the terminal and St Pancras. Be back 2 hours before departure: the airport says airlines recommend being at check-in or bag drop that early, and on a Luton connection you’ll often have a bag to drop. That makes 6 hours the realistic minimum for London, and 5.5 hours for St Albans, which is closer.
- Security. Luton has one terminal and no exit passport check. With your boarding pass you go through security and on to the gate, which the airport says closes 30 minutes before departure. From 10 November 2026, Ryanair’s bag drop closes 60 minutes before departure.
- Late trains. The last trains back before the night service leave St Pancras at 12:58am (Sundays 12:46am), Blackfriars at 12:51am (12:38am) and London Bridge at 11:36pm. Check the trains on the day: engineering works change them, mostly late at night and at weekends.

Departures
Best for your layoverStaying at the airport instead: lounges, hotels and the terminal itself.
London Luton Airport is open 24 hours, with a quiet room by Gate 17 in departures, but it lists no rooms inside the terminal. After security, My Lounge (from £37.99, open 4am to 9pm) and No1 Lounge (from £38, open 4am to 8pm) sell entry; No1 Lounge lets you in up to 3 hours before your flight.
To sleep, the airport lists hotels within walking distance. The Holiday Inn Express says it’s the closest, under 10 minutes on foot, and the ibis says about 5 minutes (500 m). The Holiday Inn and the Hampton by Hilton are on the airport’s list too.
Lounges, Fast Track and left luggage: at the airport.
